Kickoff Event for Renovation of Orleans Veterans Memorial Park
Orleans MA, April 23 -- A local non-profit organization, Veterans Memorial Park at Academy Place, Inc. in conjunction with the Memorial Day/Veterans Day committee will host a Renovation kickoff & Live Music event Saturday April 30th from 10-1 to introduce initial plans for the re-creation of Veterans Memorial Park at Academy Place in Orleans. The event will feature tours, music and schematics on display showing plans for new walking paths, placement of existing and new memorials, landscaping, seating and patio areas, including inscribed bricks funded by donations. The park renovation will transform a town gateway, an important historic location into a long-lasting tribute to Veterans.
This park, a triangular green space at the intersection of Rt. 28 and Main Street Orleans, was once the site of the Rock Harbor Academy School (1827) and the original Snow Library (1877) . In anticipation of restoration work, the Town has obtained grants from the Orleans Community Preservation Committee (CPC) to cover the costs of architectural design fees. Additional funding is needed to complete the redevelopment work, and this kickoff is an opportunity for members of the public to learn more, meet principals involved, and offer support to the project.
The event will feature entertainment by talented local folk musician Andrew de Lory, an Orleans veteran, and Natalia Bonfini, an Eastham native, award-winning blues singer/songwriter, and recent American Idol Season 20 contestant.
Financial contributions and brick orders will be possible on-site during the Kickoff event, and at any time by visiting the website at www.vetsparkacademyplace.org. The site describes the history and vision for Veterans Memorial Park at Academy Place, and includes a portal to accommodate both corporate and individual donations. Funds may be directed to honor any individual veteran identified by theater of war or branch of service, and either designated for general use, specific landscape feature naming or for purchase of one or more inscribed bricks.
In addition to financial support, the 501c3 welcomes interest from those offering time and energy to serve as a Board Member or Volunteer.
